- Cable Material: Stainless Steel

- Warranty: 1 Year
The first model we’re going to start with comes from ZLP Manufacturing and it includes a plethora of features that will bring fun-filled family afternoons into the foreground. First of all,
the material used for the cables and hardware is stainless steel, which ensures a durable build and a strength that can hold children aged 12 and up, with a maximum weight of 350 pounds. The length you can expect is 150 feet and a 5/16-inch diameter for the main cable and 8 feet for the sling cables, with the added detail that you can e-mail the manufacturer for longer ones. There are also 6 other sizes to choose from, with the shortest being 200 feet and the longest 500 feet.
Seating Options
With the Ultimate Torpedo,
you get two seat options to choose from. The first one is a 7 by 11-inch high-density plastic seat with a 4-foot rope that has an eyelet to which you attach one of the two included carabiners. The second option is an adult harness that has a belay loop and also comes with a 2-foot nylon lanyard. Either of these seating options can allow for broad use so that all family members can take a turn gliding about.
A Safe Ride
To keep you safe and secure,
the harness is reinforced and fully adjustable and the handlebar has a coating applied for a comfortable grip. For easy braking when you need it, the package includes a 5/16-inch stop block that you can attach to the cable and a bungee system that is 30 feet long. The materials are weather-resistant, thus guaranteeing a long use no matter what.
This kit has everything that you could ask for to have the best ride. When we put it together we needed the whole team, and even then we could’ve used one more person. In the end, we managed to put it together. As ZLP Manufacturing recommends, you will need a tensioning kit to get the cable to a riding set up (we used a cable-pulling winch). The riding experience itself is great, as the cable is plenty long, and both the seat and harness felt resistant and gave a feeling of security. The weight capacity was enough to hold our heaviest coworker, Kevin, without the tiniest problem. All in all, except for the time-consuming installation process, the Ultimate Torpedo is a product well worth the money.

How to Pick the Right Cable Size
When talking about installing a zip line in the backyard, things can be a bit confusing, especially when it comes to choosing the right length or diameter of the cable.
Although you may install this system for your kids, ensure the cable is sturdy enough to hold an adult. There are different cable sizes and thicknesses to choose from, so let’s take our time and explain the basics.
- First off, the cable should be resistant to the weather. If installed in the backyard, the cable will be exposed to rain, wind, sun, and other elements. It has to be sufficiently durable to resist corrosion.
- And second, the most common cables for these products, and the best ones at that, are the galvanized steel ones. Most of these can hold users up to 300 pounds.
Rules of Thumb
There is no standard size for a zip line’s cable.
The sizes you can find can be anywhere between 50 and 500 feet long. However, when installing a zip line, you should consider several other factors, such as the slope, the tension, and the resistance of the trees or other objects you are employing to put the kit together. A few rules of thumb are:
- You should have a 6 feet drop (at most) for every 100 feet of the main cable.
- If you’re going for a slower ride without a braking system, choose a 3 percent slope, and for a faster one with brakes, a 6 percent slope.
- The sag should make up approximately 2 percent of the main cable’s length.
So, for example, with a distance of 150 feet between the anchors and a 3 percent slope, you should have a drop of 5 feet and a sag of 3 feet. If you follow these criteria, you will be able to decide on the right cable to complete the installation process.
How to Install a Zip Line
Now that you’ve bought your first kit, you might be both extremely excited about the fact that you’re going to have a new activity in your backyard and very confused about how you should properly set it up.
Knowing how to install a zip line on your own can save you a couple hundred bucks, depending on where you live, and it can also give you an intense feeling of satisfaction afterward. To help you achieve that, we’ve put together a ‘How To’ segment that we hope will be of use.
Choosing the Location
First and foremost, even before purchasing your new adrenaline-inducing product,
you should be checking to see if you actually have the space you need for it. For this, the rough lines should be
a large space free of obstructions
, preferably with a bit of a natural slope. To be more specific, you’ll need to pencil out the exact measurements you’ll need to see if your land can accommodate them – but more details about said measurements are in the next fragment.
Another important aspect that you definitely need to provide is the two sturdy anchoring points. To do so, you have to decide on what an appropriate anchor would be according to your soil’s condition and your lot’s resources: either healthy trees with a minimum diameter of 12 inches or poles with the same diameter which are set at least 4 feet downwards to be able to hold their ground. With poles, it’s preferable that they are set with concrete if the soil is on the looser side.
✻ Do remember to allow for the construction of platforms and ladders if you have enough space and decide that you want to set your zip line higher up.
Figuring Out the Measurements
To know exactly how much space you need to allow, you have to take out your calculator and start the groundwork. First, you’ll need to measure two things
to know the slope and sag of your main cable:
- The length between anchor one and anchor two – This will determine the length of the whole route.
- The slope of the ground in between – As mentioned in the ‘How to Pick the Right Cable Size’ segment above, it should be either 6 or 3 percent, depending on whether or not you have a braking system add-on.
Next, to find out the elevation, you’ll need to know:
- The starting point height – Stand by the first anchor and use your height to determine it.
- The ending point height – This point is determined by taking the starting point height and adding the slope difference to it.
For example, if you have a 200-foot long main cable and a 3 percent slope, the cable slope would be 6 feet and the sag 4 feet. Elevation-wise, if the starting point is 6 feet and the ending point is 9 feet, then the elevation change would be 3 feet with the starting and ending anchors positioned at heights of 14, respectively 11 feet.
✻ There are plenty of online calculators available that can help you get the exact measurements you need for your specific location so that you can get the end results faster.
Installing the Kit
As tricky as it might seem, given the many cables and hardware pieces, putting the kit together isn’t so difficult if you follow the right steps:
- Start with the turnbuckle, by loosening it up and preparing it for the sling and main cables. This step can be skipped if your kit doesn’t include this component.
- The first sling cable needs to be wrapped around the starting anchor at the predetermined height and the loops have to be locked in the turnbuckle or with a quick link.
- At the opposite end of the connectors, run the main cable through. If the cable has a thimble, connect it as it is, but if not, allow for a longer thread-through so that you can clamp down the cable to itself.
- Thread the main cable through the trolley (unless you have a detachable type), the *brake system, the stop/brake blocks, and the spring brake. If your kit has just some of these parts, then only add those.
(*Make sure that the brake system has no loose or sagging cables that can cause accidents along the main length.)
- Repeat the same process with the second sling cable on the opposite end by setting it at the appropriate height and attaching it to its connectors.
- At this point, you can tighten the main cable by pulling on it or by using a tightening kit (some models, such as the Jugader 120ft Zipline Kit for Backyard include it). Later on, you can adjust the tension with the turnbuckle if it’s needed.
✻ Optional – If you have it, add a backup cable to the turnbuckle through the cable loops and the connecting ends, finishing it off by clamping it down.
✻ Optional – Attach a harness system or a seat to the trolley.
Test the Ride
Before anyone takes a turn on the zip line, make sure that everything is safe.
Do a test run by attaching a weight on the trolley – equivalent to that of the heaviest participant – and have it go down the line, bounce, and sag at the lowest point, all while keeping an eye on every hardware piece you’ve installed.
If you notice multiple wire breaks in a certain spot throughout the length or wire breaks at the clamping point, the cable will not be safe and it needs to be replaced.
To make sure that the braking system works perform the same test again, this time keeping your eye on the bungee brake to see how it reacts. If anything seems out of place or it doesn’t look like it’s working properly, make the necessary adjustments and try the test again.
Safety First
Everyone needs to make sure they know how to use the new equipment to avoid getting themselves into an accident. So, here are 5 other tips to help you have a positive experience:
- Wear appropriate shoes – The type that keeps your feet snug and protected, so, no open-toed options.
- Wear appropriate clothing – Nothing too baggy that can catch onto branches or other obstacles, but nothing too tight either, as you need a full and unrestricted range of movement.
- Keep your hair out of the way – Hair getting caught on a wire can be an unpleasant nuisance at the least and an extremely painful experience at the most, so make sure that you keep your hair tied securely or tucked inside the helmet.
- Don’t get distracted – Talking with the people on the ground or taking photos should be left for after the ride, as a simple moment in which you’re not paying attention could prove to be dangerous.
- Don’t leave objects in your pockets – These could hurt/impale you if you happen to hit something or fall out and injure somebody else.
- Think about the outdoor factors – Sun, bugs, and dehydration can be solved with sunscreen, repellent, and a drink of water beforehand.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a zip line work?
To put it simply, they work with the use of gravity. The connection points of the cable are installed in such a way (one higher, one lower) that the harness (or seat) coupled with your weight will start going across without a problem.
How fast can ziplining be?
The speeds you can reach are between 31 and 40 miles per hour. Equipment that is more heavy-duty, or commercial models, can get you flying with up to 50 miles per hour.
How long can a zip line be?
The most common lengths you’ll find on the market go from 5 feet up to 500, as those are seen as the ones that are most used. Longer ones can be found as well, but they might not be as common.
How tight should a zip line be?
As you ride the line, your cable should sag lower than the end anchor by approximately 2 percent of the cable’s length.
Is it safe to zipline in the rain?
As long as there is no chance of lightning strikes or strong winds, you could ride in the rain (and faster, due to the water), but slipping risks will be higher since everything will be wet.
How does a zip line brake block work?
It works with the bungee rope, by cooperating with its cable. As the rider approaches the ending anchor, the rope will begin to tense and slow down your ride into a safe brake.
How safe is zip lining?
Provided that you follow the safety measurements and use the proper equipment, you’re going to have no problem as you ride. (Check our safety tips written in the ‘How to Install a Zip Line’ segment!)
Where are the longest ziplines?
The UAE is home to a course that boasts a 9,284-foot length and approximately 5,511 feet in height. You can visit the highest mountain of the Ras al-Khaimah emirate named Jebel Jais in order to find it, and to ride it you have to pay $177.
Conclusion
Ziplining is not only a fun outdoor activity, but it is also great for your health.
It allows you to spend quality time in the middle of nature and get fresh air, it helps you burn calories, and it provides stress relief. But for it to be entertaining a great kit is required, one that has plenty of features, that can support as many family members as possible, and that can also offer an exciting ride.
