Horse Cave, population 2252, is a fourth class city by legislative approval. It is the largest city located in Hart County in south central Kentucky at Exit 58, I-65.
The city is home to the American Cave Museum/Hidden River Cave, which are located on Main Street in downtown Horse Cave. Dart Container, Inc. is the largest employer in Hart County and also located in Horse Cave. Located just outside of the city limits is Kentucky Down Under/Kentucky Caverns.
The Horse Cave Heritage Festival honors our rich heritage on the third weekend in September. View scenes from the 2012 Festival by clicking here (large file). Horse Cave became a Kentucky Silver Renaissance City in 2000. Many of the buildings in the downtown area are included on the National Register of Historic Places.
In January, 2011 a cell phone walking tour was created for which the City was awarded the Kentucky League of Cities '2012 Enterprise Cities Award', 'There's Only One Kentucky' Award from the Kentucky Tourism Commission, and the Kentucky Historical Society's 'History Award'. Tour stop numbers are displayed on the tour stop signs around town. Use your cell phone to call 270-854-3054 and enter the tour stop number on the phone keypad. You can disconnect the call while walking between stops and rejoin as many times as you like. Every stop on the tour has a corresponding Web page at http://www.horsecavestories.com/ with historic and contemporary images and oral historites about the area.  In 2012, Horse Cave was recognized as one of five state Cultural Districts certified by the Kentucky Arts Council. With it's nationally known American Cave Museum, the City offers various cultural events throughout the year. Look for a variety of events held monthly in the calendar section and news and events section.
Caverna High School, Caverna Memorial Hospital, Hart County Heath Care, T. Marzetti, Sister Shubert, Dart, Kentucky Chrome Works, Southern States Cooperative, Geothermal Supply and Square Deal Lumber Company are all located at the southern end of the city along 31-W. These existing industries, health care services, and schools are just a small part of what Horse Cave has to offer.
